Construction of Walls Progressing at Electric Substations

Platte River Power Authority is managing the construction of specially designed decorative concrete block walls around two substations in the City of Fort Collins; the Timberline Substation, located in the southwest corner of Prospect and Timberline Roads, and the Dixon Creek Substation, located at the west end of Drake Road on the west side of Overland Trail.

The purpose for constructing the walls is to improve security and public safety at the substations that are currently surrounded by chain link fences.

The wall around the Timberline Substation is expected to be completed by August 31. Construction at the Dixon Creek Substation is scheduled to begin August 19. The City requested that the Timberline wall be built first, so that work could begin as soon as possible on a new disc golf course that will wrap around the substation. Once begun, construction of the Dixon Creek wall should take about four months, weather and other circumstances permitting.  At the conclusion of the project, Platte River will enhance the existing landscaping with new trees and shrubs.

“Platte River has used the same type of system to construct walls around six other substations in Longmont, Loveland, and Laporte,“ said Platte River’s Chief Operating Officer, Jason Frisbie. “The walls are a key aspect of Platte River’s substation physical security policy intended to provide safeguards for persons and high-voltage equipment by preventing unauthorized access to the substations. We appreciate the partnership with the City of Fort Collins and the public. By all working together, we were able to incorporate suggestions from community members on the aesthetics and design of the wall projects.”

During the construction period, updated information about the project will be posted on Platte River’s website at www.prpa.org   and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/platteriverpower.
