The Making of Electricity

| Water heated to steam in a coal-fired boiler (1) spins a turbine (2) which drives the generator (3) that produces electricity for Platte River's customers. To complete the cycle, the steam condenses (4) into water and is pumped back to the boiler for reheating (5). Water from the cooling lake (6) circulates through the condenser (4) and then returns to the lake (7). Meanwhile, 99.7-percent of the fly ash and more than 80-percent of the sulfur dioxide from the coal being burned is removed by Rawhide's air quality control equipment. |
